American Girl, part of the Mattel family, is well-known for its dolls and story-driven products aimed at inspiring young girls. Their stores aren’t just retail locations—they’re full immersive brand experiences.
Project Overview:
For their new flagship at 75 Rockefeller Plaza, American Girl brought us in to support the store buildout with custom lighting solutions. The aim was to match the store’s high-end design aesthetic while creating a warm, approachable environment for guests of all ages.
What We Delivered:
We developed a series of custom fixtures built specifically for this space. The look needed to be clean and elegant—but also playful and welcoming. It’s a delicate balance to strike, especially in a space that caters to both kids and adults.
Technical Approach:
We focused on creating fixtures that wouldn’t just “fit the space,” but actually elevate it. Everything we produced used high-efficiency LEDs and custom optics to ensure consistent light quality throughout the store. The brightness levels were calibrated to enhance merchandise visibility without creating glare or hotspots.
Placement & Purpose:
Lighting was targeted around key product zones and experience areas. Whether it was a display case, reading nook, or interactive station, the lighting had to support function first—then aesthetics. The layout was intentional, guiding visitors through the store naturally without being overwhelming.
Collaboration:
We worked closely with American Girl’s design and project teams throughout the process. Feedback loops were tight, and we stayed nimble so we could adapt quickly to on-site changes and design shifts. This kind of alignment is critical when you’re working on a flagship at a location like Rockefeller Plaza.
The Result:
The lighting supported the brand’s vision and gave the space the right tone—elevated, but still fun. The launch weekend saw thousands of visitors, and the lighting played its part in making that experience smooth and memorable. For us, it was about delivering something solid, reliable, and on-brand—on time and on spec.
